Case Study: How SLNet was able to help Port of Waterford

In our first in a series of case studies, we explain how SLNet was able to help Port of Waterford run more efficiently and securely.

Case Study Details

  • Name

Port of Waterford

  • Sector

Shipping/Transportation

  • Profile

The Port of Waterford is one of the busiest ports in Ireland and the closest Irish lift-on lift-off and bulk port to mainland Europe.

  • Situation

POW needs a simple to use and reliable solution to help assist the cranes to transfer information securely.

  • Requirements

An easy-to-use telnet solution that is quick and reliable.

Overview

The Port of Waterford is a modern efficient port and the closest Irish lift-on lift-off and bulk port to mainland Europe. The docks are also capable of accommodating vessels up to 32,000 tons dwt.

The Port is active in bulk handling, breakbulk/project cargoes and container handling (Lo-Lo). Bulk and break-bulk volumes in 2018 exceeded 1.7 million tonnes with container handling standing at 44k TEU. The bulk side of the business is predominately importing and focussed on agri-inputs. The container operation supports a wide range of imports and regional exporters from the food, pharmaceutical and other sectors. The annual value of goods through the Port was estimated at €1.7 billion in 2017 with just under 1,000 jobs in, or supported by businesses in, the port zone.

Challenged Faced

The cranes in use in Waterford Port are necessarily remote from the main infrastructure and systems. It was essential that they can be provided with up to the second information on container and cargo movements. The solution needs to be able to work across large distances and must be performant, reliable and scalable. The operator interaction was required to be efficient, intuitive and non-distracting while providing critical information at a glance and real-time updates back to the main systems.

How SLNet helped

SLNet assists with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) by helping the process run more smoothly and increasing efficiency and profitability.

All cranes in use are fitted with ruggedised vehicle mounted computers. SLNet provides the communication layer between these computers and the MS windows hosted backend business systems.

In this scenario, SLNet facilitates millisecond scale remote communication between the cranes and the backend ERP systems and is a critical link in the communications chain. SLNet provides the required scale, responsiveness and ease of deployment and management for this critical aspect of the Port of Waterford’s day to day operations. Only the backend is fitted with SLNet, the cranes themselves run a terminal emulator.

Testimonial

“Over the 20 years, we have been using SLNet, it has proven to be a reliable and critical element of our container management system, allowing our rugged computers to connect to the back-end database system and keep systems up to date.”

Noel Collins – IT Director for Port of Waterford

Benefits

Reliability

Clients want a software that they can trust. They want peace of mind that the software is working correctly in the background ensuring they don’t use revenue loss.

“Tech issues with software can be a major problem in a large busy port. Having a reliable technology like SLNet means we know there aren’t going to be connections issues in the middle of a busy work day.”

Ease of Use

Simple to navigate and too easy to train new employees. SLNet is a plug and play technology with very little maintenance required.

“The simplicity of SLNet’s interface means it is easy to use and not much time is needed for training new employees.”

Easy to Install

Quick and simple installation means you will be ready to use on the same day. Our support team is always on hand to assist with any installation requirements.

“We found the installation process for SLNet to be straight forward and requires very little maintenance.”

How session monitoring can help your organisation

No matter the size of your company, you know that a slow down in their logistic’s pipeline can have a huge effect on many parts of your business.

When these problems do arise, then it is important for your company to find where the problem is coming from and fix it quickly before it begins to affect profits. That is where session monitoring can help you.

What is Session Monitoring?

One of the most impressive features of SLNet is the ability to monitor any telnet sessions within the organization.

Session monitoring is the method used to locally observe the display on a remote SSH/Telnet session.

Why it is important for a business?

From an admin point of view, it is important to be able to track and monitor all telnet devices across your organisation.

This is especially useful if you have operator training and certification, allowing supervisors to monitor session activity and provide feedback through the training cycle.

You can monitor from a central point of your network, monitoring any session regardless of geography, making it especially useful if you have a large multi-site operation with numerous locations across the country or continent.

Errors can be fixed and your organisation can learn where the pipeline is being slowed down and where improvements can be made.

How SLNet can help

With SLNet from SeattleLab, we can take away some of the worries that you may experience while running a large organisation.

Working in conjunction with Windows 2016 & 2019, our fast, responsive technology can help you monitor large areas of your pipeline.

Our latest version of SLNet is called SL Secure and is our most advanced to date.

SL Secure optimises the SSH protocol link between radio frequency devices and works with Windows versions 2016 onward as well as enabling an unlimited number of users.

In our latest blog, we explains how SLNet can help keep your organisation secure in an ever-changing world.

What is SSH? And how can SL Secure help?

logistics

What is SSH?

SSH, also known as Secure Shell or Secure Socket Shell, is a network protocol that gives users, particularly system administrators, a secure way to access a computer over an unsecured network.

SSH provides strong authentication and secure communications over insecure channels, connecting an SSH client application with an SSH server.

Why is it needed?

SSH provides a mechanism for establishing a cryptographically secured connection between two parties, authenticating each side to the other, and passing commands and output back and forth.

In addition to providing strong encryption, SSH is widely used by network administrators to manage systems and applications remotely, deliver software patches, or execute commands and move files.

For organisations that need to transfer data quickly and securely, SSH is an essential part of their logistics pipeline.

Who is it for?

Every organisation could benefit from the high level of encryption provided by SLNet Secure. But it is the heavily regulated industries such as Healthcare, that see the most value from SLNet Secure.

Any organisation using remote SAP consoles, especially those in Retail, Warehousing & Food Processing will benefit from the end to end encryption.

How SL Secure can help

SL Secure builds on the highly successful SLNet product range. It adds a layer of security between the SLNet server and the wireless handheld devices whilst maintaining the features provided by SLNet.

SL Secure optimises the SSH protocol link between radio frequency devices and works with Windows versions 2016 onward as well as enabling an unlimited number of users.

SL Secure is the exciting new release from SeattleLab

SLNet Secure

SeattleLab is proud to announce that our latest release SL Secure is now available.

SL Secure builds on the highly successful SLNet product range, it adds a layer of security between the SLNet server and the wireless handheld devices whilst maintaining the features provided by SLNet.

SL Secure optimises the SSH protocol link between radio frequency devices and it works with Windows versions 2016 onward as well as enabling an unlimited number of users.

SeattleLab CTO Lorcan Kennedy said “SeattleLab are delighted to announce our latest release. With SL Secure, we feel we have the most secure SSH software to support your organisation from the ground up.

Kennedy spoke of the improved usability with data migration adding that “Our new release means migrating to the cloud has never been easier or more secure.”

Security

Customizable Permissions
Users run in their own appropriate security context, with all their own permissions in place, just as if they had logged in from the main console. This completely preserves all Windows’ C2 security features. SL Secure can lock down terminals so they can only reach specific applications and be prevented from getting to a command prompt.
Secure Logon
It also ensures encryption of usernames and passwords for secure logon over the network.
Full SSH Support
Out of the box support for SSH.

Usability for End-User

High Performance
SL Secure communicates via Winsock Sockets to the terminals and via Pipes to SLCon and the Windows Console Applications. To minimise the impact on the CPU resources, the SLNet secure programs are heavily multi-threaded and asynchronous.
Improved Performance and Reliability
Can handle thousands of user connections with modest requirements. SSH sessions tend to be more robust than the equivalent Telnet session.
Terminal Emulation
Can be customised to meet any terminal emulation or application character needs, details of which are provided in the Installation, Configuration and Administration Guide.

Access to Window’s Common Command Shell
Users who SSH into SL Secure can have full access to Windows’ Common Command Shell. It is completely configurable by the administrator, who can choose to disable access to the Command Shell on a user-by-user basis.
Direct Access to Custom Applications
It offers you the power to define default custom applications for users as soon as they log in.
Terminal Sequences
Also provides ANSI terminal sequences (compatible with the VT-100 and VT-220) for cursor positioning and formatted screen handling. It supports colours, UTF-8 characters, Unicode characters and custom key sequences.
Logging
Can insert a record in the Windows event log every time a user connects or disconnects along with a record of what process the user executed and the resulting data and screens from that process.
Remote Administration
SL Secure can be administered locally or remotely.
Licensing
For security purposes, SL Secure is licensed to specific servers. A license key tied to the server ensures you can track your SLNet Secure licenses and prevent unauthorized uses. Install SLNet on a target server, it activates temporarily and provides a license request file that you email to the SeattleLab license group. A license key file is generated and sent back to you.

Supporting the latest Windows software

Windows 2016 and 2019 support
SL Secure fully supports Windows Server 2016 & 2019.
64 bit Console Support

Also fully supports 64 bit Console applications such as SAPConsole 7.3.

Unicode and UTF-8 support
SL Secure has full support for international languages – single and double-byte character sets. You can set the font and code page to meet any need.

SeattleLab introduce SLNet 6.3, our 64-bit version

64-bit

As part of its ongoing development plan for SLNet, SeattleLab is proud to announce the release of SLNet 6.3, our first fully 64-bit version. With all the new functionality provided in  SLNet 6.2, this version removes all the 32-bit components to offer a full 64-bit conformant product. For more details, click the Read More button below – including details on how to download this version.

https://seattlelab.com/product/slnet-v6-3/

SLNet 6.3 has been tested on Windows 2016 and Windows 2019 and provides a continued upgrade path.

One of the newest features to come out of the Windows 2019 release is the 64-bit compatibility. This is now the standard of all Microsoft’s newest solutions. With more processing power than ever before, WS2019 is newer, faster and more secure than any version that has come before it.

With many of our clients updating their software to Windows Server 2019 and 64-bit compatibility, we here at SeattleLab didn’t want to be left behind. So we began developing the most up to date version of SLNet we have ever seen and that is where SLNet 6.3 was born.

SeattleLab would recommend that if your infrastructure is fully 64-bit compatible, then all new users should consider SLNet 6.3.
