Communicate instantly across your organisation with SeattleLab

terminal emulation

Communication is key to any organization hoping to maximize its potential. With SeattleLab we have some unique features that can help your company achieve its goals.

Multi-Line

As an administrator, it helps to be able to send a message to all employees across all devices.

Anyone who has worked in logistics knows that some orders must be given priority either due to the specifics of the order or the profile of the client. When priorities change like this it is important to be able to alert everyone within the organization of these changes. Failure to alert every member of staff to these changes could have huge consequences for your company’s logistics pipeline.

With multi-line banner support, the Administrator can send updates easily and securely to all employees.

Direct Messaging

Another important thing when running a business is that you have the ability to communicate instantly to everyone across your organisation.

Most manufacturing plants can be quite large, loud and busy meaning it is important to have software that allows your administrator the ability to message employees instantly and directly.

While your employees are working the factory floor, it can be beneficial to use your telnet-connected devices to send direct messages to these colleagues.

This saves time and unnecessary work in your normal day-to-day operations, and in an emergency situation, it can become critical.

Where we come in

These two features are exclusive to our SLNet and SL Secure product range. To experience them for yourself, you can download the free trial of both our telnet and SSH products by clicking the links below:

Automatic Logon: how SeattleLab can help your organisation

automatic logon

Small delays build to large problems

Anyone who has worked in warehousing and logistics will know how much time is a major factor in your company’s productivity. Just a few small setbacks can lead to delays which could cost your organisation substantially.

Logging on to a device each and every time is just one of these delays that can begin to add up. Enough of these delays and you may have severe problems in your logistics pipeline.

This can be further compounded by losing the connection to the telnet server in the middle of an important task. This is compounded when it becomes necessary to log back in each time the connection is lost.

Automatic Logon

SeattleLab can help with that with one of its most unique features. Automatic logon is the ability to logon into any device without always needing a username or password. This cuts vital minutes off your employee’s workloads each day and allow your organisation to streamline their logistics pipeline.

Logon details will be placed in the shell specified in the User Profile. Therefore the need to type a username and password into small rf devices each time is erased.

SLNet also gives you the ability to have a shared ID that can be used from a single IP address or a secure group of IP addresses/

SLNet can also automatically logon a user from a device that connects from a specific IP address or a range of addresses. This enables you to have a shared user ID be used from a single IP address or a secured range of IP addresses.

This comes in extra handy when there is a temporary telnet disconnection (for example, the interruption of an RF device’s signal).  the Windows IP stack makes SLNet aware of this interruption and you are automatically connected back to your application.

Why your company should upgrade to SSH?

Upgrade to SSH

For many in the manufacturing and logistics industries, one of the biggest questions being asked is “Why upgrade over to SSH?”. In today’s blog, we explain what SSH is and why has it become imperative to have in your organisation.

Are you prepared for the switch to SSH?

Switch to SSH

There have been many seismic shifts in the world over the last 2 years. The whole world was affected in different ways. The logistics industry was unique in that it was one of a small few that were unable to work from home. This has meant companies working in the global supply chain must do everything to mitigate risk.

One of the ways we saw them do this was by changing over from telnet to SSH (Secure Shell). SSH has been slowly but surely taking over the logistics industry in the last few years. But it is only in the last 12 months, that we are seeing thousands of businesses making the switch to SSH.

You asked, and we listened

For many years now we have had clients asking about SSH.

SL Secure was released by SeattleLab in 2021 and it’s the first fully SSH product from SeattleLab.

SL Secure builds on the highly successful SLNet product range, by creating a SSH software with built-in security between the SLNet server and the wireless handheld devices.

SL Secure optimises the SSH protocol link between radio frequency devices and it works with Windows versions 2019 as well as enabling an unlimited number of users.

Are you prepared?

But this move from telnet to SSH technology can be complicated if your company is not adequately prepared.

There are many questions you must ask yourself before the switch to SSH:

  • Do all devices need to be moved over?
  • Do you need to upgrade?
  • Do your devices need both telnet and SSH?

end of support

End of support

As we arrive at a new year, we here at SeattleLab feel it is time to begin looking to the future. So we have made the decision to end of support for our legacy products 5.0 and 5.3 from December 31st 2022. This will mean there will no longer be bug fixes or patches available after this date. Our 5.3 customers have until then to upgrade to a newer version of our products.

How SeattleLab work with SAP & other technologies

SAP

One of the great features of SeattleLab’s products is their versatility. Both the telnet configured SLNet and the SSH configured SL Secure can work with a huge variety of applications (including SAP).

We recently surveyed our clients on the different technologies they use with SLNet and SL Secure.

We found that the main prerequisites needed for a compatible application are they must have the following:

  • User Interface Display
  • Character-Based
  • Keyboard Input

Below you can read a little more detail about the technologies used in our product range:

SAP

Our surveys showed the most popular enterprise software with our SL products amongst our clients was SAP.

SLNet has been highly recommended for many years by SAP for Telnet Services to connect to SAP Console.

It is used worldwide by organizations to connect users to SAP Console without a problem.

Our products add the ability to send and collect data to and from RF Scanners and to update the data directly to the SAP database via SAP Console. This is a proven and tested solution used by organisations across the world.

Windows Compatible

While the most popular enterprise software by far is SAP Console,  our survey showed that some of our clients were using a selection of different applications. These clients come from a wide variety of different sectors such as Warehouse Management, Retail and Healthcare.

Anything application on a windows box that can be utilised through a command window can be used with our product range.

Custom Applications

Our survey also showed that some of our customers have even developed their own applications to run on their central server in place of SAP.

Clients such as Port of Waterford have worked to develop their own ERP technology to run on the central server. And by working closely with SeattleLab they were able to create to be compatible with SLNet & SL Secure.

Check out our case studies to read how we were able to help Port of Waterford.

How SL Secure can be used with your existing SLNet software

Last year SeattleLab released its first SSH only software with SL Secure.

SL Secure creates a Windows SSH server with a secure encrypted connection between wireless handheld devices and your line of business applications.

And while the product is not a replacement for SLNet, there are many reasons to use them side by side on the same Windows server.

Mixed capability Devices

For many organisations in the Manufacturing and Warehousing sectors, technology has changed exponentially over the last few years.

But these technological changes can come at a great cost to these sectors. So it has become quite common to use both telnet and SSH together in different areas of the organisation.

So these organisations need an SSH technology that works side by side with their existing telnet server.

With SeattleLab, you can have two different technologies that work side by side with SLNet & SL Secure and run concurrently on an individual Windows server.

Migration Assistance

And for those organisations planning a migration from telnet to SSH, SeattleLab products have you covered.

Both SLNet & SL Secure can be used alongside each throughout the migration process.

As mentioned above, they can be used flawlessly alongside each other meaning your migration can be done at your organisation’s pace and without the need for additional servers.

What does End of Life mean for your Windows Server?

In January 2020, Microsoft ended its support of Windows Server 2008 after 13 years.

What does this mean?

It means that there will be no free security patches and updates released by Microsoft. It means that if you keep using Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008/R2, you will be at a huge risk of being exploited by cybercriminals if new vulnerabilities are disclosed.

You can continue using Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008/R2 after January 2020, but at your own risk, unless you pay for extended security updates. You might need to do this because you have a legacy application that won’t run on the new operating system.

Why Now?

If a Service Pack is released, then support for the previous Service Pack (or OS version) ends two years later.

All Windows versions have an expiration date for the support of their products. This is usually about 10 years after the initial release. This is done to allow the company to direct more resources to their newer and more exciting versions.

Why do you need to upgrade?

  • Compliance issues: For healthcare and e-commerce industries that deal with lots of sensitive customer data, entrusting your data to an out of service technology would be seen as very dangerous.
  • Financial burden: Huge costs will be incurred through trying to maintain an out of service OS.
  • Security: With Microsoft no longer offering security patches for the products, this leaves your organisation in a vulnerable position from attacks.
  • Compatibility: As time goes by you will find fewer and fewer new applications that will work with your old operating system. This may mean having to use older versions of apps that themselves may be out of service.
  • Poor performance: All-round performance is just going to be slower on the legacy versions.

Future versions

For a breakdown of all future versions and their expiration dates, you can check out the following link:
